Another Big Win for New Zealand Non-fiction


Two New Zealand non-fiction writers will win $35,000 and be awarded a CLNZ Writers’ Award at a ceremony hosted by Copyright Licensing New Zealand. The event will be held at the Auckland Town Hall on 05 September. The winners will be announced on the night and interviewed by Finlay MacDonald. Former winner, Steve Braunias will also speak about NZ non-fiction and his award-winning book Civilisation.

The five finalists, in the running for the Award for 2013 are:

 ·         Eleanor Black: Women of Cosme (Remuera, Auckland)

·         Geoff Chapple: Terrain (Devonport, Auckland)

·         Bruce Hayward: Geology and Landforms of northern New Zealand (Remuera, Auckland)

·         Angela Middleton: “Kia Kaha – Be Strong” William Cotton’s New Zealand Journals 1942-1847 (North East Valley, Dunedin)

·         Margaret Pointer: Niue – A History 1774 – 1974 (Khandallah, Wellington)


Paula Browning, CEO of Copyright Licensing New Zealand commented that “of the 68 applications we received this year, the ones chosen by the Selection Panel are those where the writer’s passion for their subject was evident in their writing. Their outline and plan for the book was clear and their research has been carefully undertaken.”
