MANDELA - see the book, read the movie.- strong NZ connection
I got to read and view this book last weekend and what a stunner it proved to be.
Described as "a film and historical companion" it is filled with wonderful colour photographs from the movie with matching photographs from real life, as well as extensive quotes from The Long Walk to Freedom on which the movie was based.
With a great introduction by Madela's great friend and fellow prisoner on Robben Island, Ahmed Kathrada, and also pieces by film producer Amant Singh, film director Justin Chadwick, production designer Johnny Breedt and screenwriter William Nicholson. This is a book to be treasured, a great souvenir of the powerful movie, and a bargain at NZ$37.99.
Footnote:
I was delighted to read this final paragraph in Ahmed Kathrada's Foreword:
Finally, a tribute to Geoff Blackwell, Ruth Hobday and the entire staff at P.Q.Blackwell for publishing this book and many other books about South Africa. Thank you for being such good friends of the new South Africa.
