The National Book Foundation, presenter of the National Book Awards, announced today that it will award its 2014 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to the ever-flexible Ursula K. Le Guin at the National Book Awards ceremony this November. Le Guin is the author of dozens of novels and short story collections (many of them award-winning) in a variety of genres, but is perhaps best known for her Earthsea cycle and early sci-fi feminist triumph The Left Hand of Darkness
“Ursula Le Guin has had an extraordinary impact on several generations of readers and, particularly, writers in the United States and around the world,” Harold Augenbraum, the Foundation’s Executive Director, said in a press release. “She has shown how great writing will obliterate the antiquated—and never really valid—line between popular and literary art. Her influence will be felt for decades to come.”
Also: Neil Gaiman will present the award! Can’t imagine a better on-stage pairing than that.
