Two superb small colourful NZ titles

New Zealand’s historic places are tied intrinsically to the landscape, where evidence of the earliest settlements are clearly visible. In the latest title in his compact pictorial series, photographer Rob Suisted has recorded our most impressive and popular heritage sites.

Early Maori pa and earthworks hug coastal and hilltop sites, old whaling stations and
remnants from the exploits of gold miners lie in remote locations and fortifications from the New Zealand Wars, historic homesteads and museums recall the colonial period.  Bridges, railways, wharves, churches and cemeteries, civic monuments and memorials and other
sites of important historical or architectural significance are featured according to region,
from north to south through the country.

Dr Sven Schroeder has written an interesting text that places the photographs in a
historical context, relating stories and incidents that bring the past to life.

About the authors
Wellington-based photographer and conservationist Rob Suisted combines his passion
for wildlife and magnificent scenery with a successful photographic library. His images are
well known throughout New Zealand and have appeared in calendars, books and
magazines. In 2011 he was awarded runner-up for the Whitcoulls Pictorial Travel Book of
the Year Award for Majestic New Zealand published by New Holland. He is the photographer of 14 books published with New Holland, and this title is the latest in the successful
square pictorial series.

Dr Sven Schroeder is an archaeologist, heritage manager and exhibition designer working
for the Department of Conservation. He lives in Wellington.

Holding a special place in the hearts and minds of New Zealanders, the dramatic scenery
 found in our
high country also attracts visitors from around the world. In the sixth title in his compact-format pictorial series, leading photographer Rob Suisted showcases the landscape, wildlife and
lifestyle of this visually stunning area.

The terrain is challenging and varied, from the central volcanic region of the North Island and, across
Cook Strait, from Marlborough down to Southland. High peaks and icy glaciers give way to
fertile river valleys and tussock grassland; the landscape supports a diverse array of alpine
flora and fauna and is made up of wilderness areas and farmland. Increasingly, vast tracts of
the high country are being protected in parks, which inspire visitors, writers, filmmakers and adventure-seekers alike.

With well-researched introductions and descriptive captions that reference the natural history and current land use of the area, Alison Dench’s text adds context and depth to Rob
Suisted’s evocative photographs.
