Jo McColl, who owns Unity Books on High St, was saddened to hear of the bookseller's departure from its Queen St flagship store.
"It's terrifying. We depend on Whitcoulls to stock all the mid-range product like Dan Brown that we don't want to do, although we have always stocked new Dan Brown books.

"This is bad for Unity and bad for Auckland. Publishers will not be happy about this because they need the really big sellers," McColl said.
Whitcoulls sometimes sent customers to Unity and Unity sent customers to Whitcoulls, she said, indicating the relationship was more one of co-operation than competition.

Good riddance to Whitcoulls--it should have been euthanized like Angus & Robertson was in Australia after RedGroup went bust. Outlets like the Warehouse will continue to stock the mass market fodder that better run shops like Unity don't want.
