Author heard to mutter 'it's my ex-wife' as woman heckles him as he promotes his latest book about a collapsing marraige
Ian McEwan has been heckled by his estranged ex-wife as he promoted his controversial new book, it has been claimed.
McEwan was on stage at a book festival in front of hundreds of fans, discussing his novel The Children's Act, when a woman stood up to shout about an injunction.
The author was heard to mutter "it's my ex-wife" after the interruption.
The couple went through a difficult divorce and custody battle in the 1990s, when an injunction was placed forbidding his ex-wife Penny Allen from speaking about the case.
McEwan has previously hinted his personal encounter with the courts inspired The Children Act, which is about a family court judge.
"When are you going to lift the injunction you have on me and my partner?" she said, adding he had put out "lies and defamation" about her.
"It's a serious question," she said.
McEwan is understood to have recognised his former wife at the back of the audience, but did not react to the accusations.
