The Coalition for Better Broadcasting is a non-profit charitable trust that promotes public service broadcasting and media. We need Members to join us in the fight to retain Radio NZ and get back public service television. Membership only costs $20 per year and there are cheaper or dearer options if you're feeling generous. Membership allows you to take part in our various activities, access the Member's Only pages of the website, attend AGMs and elect Trustees to the Board. And your sub gives us the resources to make an impact (speaking of which we're taking donations too).
New Zealand broadcasting and media is in a pretty dire state. There is no non-commercial television left in this country, our state television broadcaster is more crassly commercial than the privately owned TV3, news and current affairs is almost all tabloid and sensational rubbish, our few remaining investigative journalists are hamstrung by bosses desperately simplifying everything in the hope of staying profitable, regional television stations are disappearing, and Radio NZ has been surviving on a funding freeze for over five years! Meanwhile any new online media must either prove itself commercially or survive unpaid.
The CBB aims to change all of that. We want to get inside the heads of politicians, to make them see the importance of public service broadcasting and media to education, democracy, Kiwi identity and the general happiness of Kiwis. The CBB will represent audiences - the most important stakeholder in NZ media - at all levels; grassroots, government and in the media.
