This delightful story is about an unexpected friendship between
an adventurous cat and a grandfather who loves to fish.
Blackie is no
ordinary cat. Blackie is a cat with character and a cat with a kind heart. She
also knows what’s good for her – food, fishing and friendship! And Grandpop is
in need of a friend. He has returned to his favourite camping ground, but this
trip is different – Grandpop is alone. One morning, Grandpop discovers Blackie
on his caravan step. Over the next few weeks, a very special friendship emerges
between Blackie and Grandpop. The story finishes with a heart-warming twist.
Blackie the fisher-cat is illustrated by
talented artist Gabriella Klepatski, who beautifully captures the magic of New
Zealand’s coastline.
About the author:
JAY PEREIRA grew up in a big
family that loved to camp by the sea. Blackie the Fisher-cat is inspired by memories of these adventures, and also by an
old friend who really did discover an extraordinary cat on the doorstep of his
caravan.
A teacher for many
years, Jay continues to work in education and is passionate about encouraging
children to love books. In her spare time she enjoys running, reading, writing
and relaxing. Sometimes her best ideas for stories pop into her head as she
runs! Jay presently lives in Dunedin, and from her desk she can look out over
the harbour and watch the birds and boats pass by. Her stories have been
published by Learning Media and Reed Publishing.
About the illustrator
GABRIELLA KLEPATSKI was born
and educated in Poland, but in NZ she has swapped her degree in architecture
for a career in illustrating and graphic arts. Over the years she has been
collaborating with most NZ publishing houses and illustrating books by many NZ
authors. Apart from illustrating Gabriella also works as a tutor, does architectural
presentations and takes part in various art exhibitions around the country. She
held her first solo exhibition in 2011 in the Devonport’s Depot Gallery in
Auckland. Her favourite subjects are people and other living creatures, in all
shapes and sizes and in all sorts of life situations. She uses a variety of
media, often mixing them together and experimenting with texture.
