TV presenter Stephen Fry is to judge an international competition, launched by literature and technology site The Literary Platform, to animate an audio recording of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams.
The recording, made in 1993 for his US publisher of the time, Bob Stein of Voyager Expanded Books, is of Adams talking about the evolution of the book, from rocks to scrolls to the silicon chip.
"Getting the Book Invented Properly: The International Douglas Adams Animation Competition" aims to find the animation that best illustrates the recording, which Stein has donated to The Literary Platform. Entrants can use all or just part of the recording, which can be downloaded.
The judging panel comprises: Fry, who was a close friend of Adams; Stein; Guardian journalist Ranjit Dhaliwal; and Merlin Nation and Chris Angelkov, founders of design practice Atyp.
The competition platform, Launchpad6, is now open for entries, with the deadline 15th April 2012. The longlist will be announced on 30th April, and the winner on 25th May, when Adams' fans carry a towel in reference to it being the most useful item an "interstellar hitchhiker can have".
The winner receives an iPad 2 loaded with Douglas Adams books and apps and a Don't Panic towel to carry on Towel Day.
