Ubud Writers & Readers Festival

title
The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has had a long standing respect and relationship with the Ubud based group: Threads of Life. This is a fair trade business that uses culture and conservation to alleviate poverty in rural Indonesia. The heirloom-quality textiles and baskets commissioned are made with local materials and natural dyes. With the proceeds from the Threads of Life gallery, we help weavers to form independent cooperatives and to manage their resources sustainably.
In 2012, UWRF and Threads of Life have come together to present a real Bali experience, combining the 5 day 2012 UWRF and a 5 day tour throughout East Bali. Following on from 5 days participation in the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, this 5-day textile tour is led by Threads of Life and based at the Alila Manggis in east Bali.
We will meet weavers in their homes, their studios, and cooperatives in the villages of Seraya on Bali's dry east coast, amongst the lush rice fields of Sidemen, and in the ancient and storied community of Tenganan Pegeringsingan.

Experiencing the weavers' lives through these visits, and seeing their textiles, will be the highlights of a tour that offers unique insights into the forces at play in Bali's contemporary textile traditions. Being based at the Alila Manggis we enjoy the resort's quiet luxury, the culinary excellence of the Seasalt restaurant, and the highly-regarded cooking school.
Breaking the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror.

Early Birds are on the wing, the names are starting to be whispered and the program of the UWRF is flexing its muscles. Join us 3-7 October for the best conversations of the year: you won't have to say a word.
