Ken Follett to Write Epic Trilogy

This story from The Book Standard where please his myriad of fans.

Bestselling author of World Without End, Ken Follett, will write a new epic trilogy, called "The Century Trilogy," which will "focus on intense personal dramas set against the vast looming background of world-changing historical events" of the 20th Century. The series will follow a number of families and the three books will take place before and up to World War I, World War II and the Cold War.

"When Ken first told me about "The Century," I knew it was another monumental step in his amazing career," said Follett's literary agent Amy Berkower. "After finishing World Without End, and successfully meeting the challenge to write a sequel to The Pillars of the Earth, an international phenomenon that has sold over 11 million copies, Ken's publishers would have been happy if he had decided to write another bestselling thriller.

Instead, Ken has chosen to give himself yet another challenge and write a novel that draws upon his skills as a writer of thrillers as well as historical fiction."Dutton, a division of Penguin Group, has acquired U.S. right to the trilogy, from Berkower, while Macmillan has acquired U.K. rights.

The first book will be released in 2010, with the second and final books coming out in 2012 and 2014. New American Library will release paperback editions in the U.S. one year after each hardcover edition. The series has also already been sold in Spain and Italy, with deals in Germany and France forthcoming.

"These novels will represent the best of Ken Follett—combining the scintillating action of his spy thrillers like Eye of the Needle, and more recently, Whiteout, with the moving grandeur of his epic historical fiction, epitomized by The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End," said Brian Tart, the president and publisher of Dutton, who acquired the rights. "The trilogy combines epic scope, fierce human drama, and the shocking twists and turns of the geopolitical intrigue that have been the hallmark of Ken Follett's career, but on a scale even he has not conceived until now."
