2007 Storylines Betty Gilderdale Award

Hamilton-based writer Kāterina Mataira has been chosen to receive the 2007 Betty Gilderdale Award for her significant work in translating picture books into te reo Māori and her own contribution as a writer of contemporary and traditional Māori stories.

Storylines makes this award annually for outstanding service to New Zealand children's literature. Previous winners include Frances Plumpton, Dorothy Butler and Ray Richards.

Kāterina Mataira helped set up the first Māori language immersion school and has been at the forefront of Māori language revival and teaching for more than three decades.

She has retold many stories in te reo and has published a number of award-winning picture books in Māori.

Kāterina has a Masters degree in education and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1996. In 1998 she was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and in 2001 the Te Tohu Tiketike a Te Waka Toi/Te Waka Toi Exemplary Award
Her award will be presented in Hamilton – the date to be advised.
