THE NEW YORKER , Oct.1, 2007

Love this cover, Stairway to the Stars,by Philippe Petit-Roulet.

In the 11 days I was away in London three copies of The New Yorker arrived! The vagaries of the international postal system.

I read this issue first and founds loads to entertain and educate me including a piece by Austin Kelley about the Strand Bookstore's Books-by-the - Foot service which provides ready-made libraries for private homes, stores, and movie sets. Click here to read the story, you'll enjoy it.

Then Hermione Lee in conversation with Philip Roth about Exit Ghost; Louis Menand revisits Jack Kerouac and the Beats; there are several detailed book reviews, an excellent piece of short fiction, all the usual brilliant cartoons and a heap more besides. An especially good issue of a great magazine.
