Tiny Time Out Booksellers in
Auckland was on 8 February 2017 announced a finalist in the London Book Fair’s
Bookstore of the Year Awards.
Winners of the 2016 Nielsen
Bookseller of the Year award year, it is clear that what Time Out lacks in
size, it makes up for in expertise and ambition.
The Bookstore of the Year award is part of the wider
International Excellence Awards, held in partnership with the UK Publishers
Association (PA) and sponsored by Hytex, celebrating excellence in 16
categories. It is self-nominated, says Jenna Todd, Manager of Time Out
Bookstore:
“After our friends at Readings
Carlton in Melbourne won this award in 2016, we thought we should enter! We
nominated ourselves and sent in an application.”
Booksellers NZ CEO Lincoln
Gould says, “It is wonderful to see Time Out Bookstore going from strength to
strength, with Manager Jenna Todd being one of the first recipients of the Kobo
Booksellers NZ Scholarship back in 2014.”
They have known about this
honour for a few weeks, and Todd says, “My first thought was...’I’m going to
London!’ but also that I was so proud and excited for our wee store.”
The other two bookstores in the
running this year are Shakespeare and Company in Paris, France, and Exclusive
Books in South Africa, which has branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Asked whether she had visited
either of the other two bookstores nominated, Todd said, “I've never been to
Shakespeare & Co, but have definitely heard of them. Exclusive looks like
such a lovely store too. We are just so happy to be shortlisted, to be honest!”
Booksellers NZ wishes them all
the best, and looks forward to hearing what happens at the awards, which will
be held on Tuesday 14 March in The Conference Centre, Olympia, London.
