02.08.13 | Bookseller News Team Erotic writer Sylvia Day tops The Bookseller’s first e-book ranking, the first ever e-book chart that includes publisher-supplied volume sales numbers.
Entwined with You (Penguin) sold more than 200,000 digital copies in June, ahead even of its print sales; meaning that it becomes the first title to top both monthly lists having sold more digitally than in print.
In total 12 titles in the e-book Top 50 sold more digitally than in print, including Lee Child’s thrillers Killing Floor and Tripwire; Gillian Flynn’s backlist thrillers Dark Places and Share Objects; and two erotic titles written by Julie Kenner, Release Me and Claim Me.
The biggest selling title on the list sold 201,053 copies and the lowest 5,262. Although the biggest digital book outsold the biggest selling print book in the month, the print Top 50 still accounts for greater sales than the digital Top 50. The total number of units sold digitally from the digital Top 50 was 784,000 compared with the 1,341,000 sold by the print list. The ratio means e-books took up 37% of the total units sales across both formats, ahead of the industry average of about 25%.
The Bookseller estimates that the e-book market was worth £17.6m in June, 19% of the overall book market as measured by value.
The e-book ranking will run monthly.
