A new Jeeves novel written in the style of P G Wodehouse could be a
"terrible mess", author Sebastian Faulks has admitted, as he warns his critics
could be proved "absolutely right".
Faulks acknowledged he could fall "flat on his face" after agreeing to write
a sequel in the style of PG Wodehouse, adding readers may end up concluding he
had "bitten off more than he could chew".
The new book, entitled Jeeves and the Wedding Bells, was announced
last month and is due to be published in November.
It has already been the subject of some controversy,
with literary critics and readers questioning Faulks' ability to
mimic Wodehouse successfully.
Faulks has now admitted his doubters could be “absolutely right”, disclosing
he originally turned the commission down fearing he would “make a terrible mess
of it”.
Speaking at the British Library this week as part of the Cityread London
festival, he said he had finally changed his mind after learning the Wodehouse
family particularly wanted him to take it on.
