‘Helen, the Helen Meads Tragedy’ launched in Wellington

Report by Rob McCann - White Ribbon Campaign Manager, Families Commission
Over 80 energised supporters came to hear David White speak at the launch of ‘Helen, the Helen Meads Tragedy’ about the events that led him to write one of the more honest books I’ve ever read. It was a heartfelt speech… well let’s rephrase that, it was less speech and more a chat. One where David continued to shine a light onto the violence that claimed his daughter and the lack of ‘family violence understanding’ that contributed to the horrific events of 23 September 2009.

David wants people to read the book and discuss the issue of violence towards women, because in doing so, we can’t help but become educated. And with education, comes understanding and the chance to stop such events from every occurring to another family.
The evening was filled with both sadness and laughter, and importantly, with a sense that the people in the room could become part of the solution, by taking the book’s words to their friends and family, and sharing it’s messages. It’s a strategy that White Ribbon and Women’s Refuge are right behind. Congratulations David. It’s a great book, one that no father should ever have to write.
Blessing of the book with Sam Jackson and David.jpg

Helen - Women's Refuge CE Heather Henarae MCs the book launch.
