Allen & Unwin buys Murdoch Books

Australian publisher Allen & Unwin has announced the acquisition of Murdoch Books. The sum involved was not disclosed.
Matt Handbury, chairman and c.e.o. of Murdoch Books, said that his company's tradition of quality publishing would be continued by Allen & Unwin. "I am thrilled that the business will become an integral and wholly owned part of the largest Australian independent publishing house, and the efforts that my team have put into building the Murdoch Books brand will seamlessly continue in its new home. We can all look forward now to seeing a secure, sustainable and fertile future for the Murdoch Books list," he said.

Allen & Unwin c.e.o. Robert Gorman said the acquisition would "add balance" to his company's publishing programme and allow Allen & Unwin to offer "the broadest range of books" to its customers around the world. Gorman said: "We have long admired Murdoch Books as one of the most impressive and innovative Australian publishers. The two companies share a rich history of producing outstanding Australian books that resonate not only in our domestic market but also reach far beyond that into international markets."
Murdoch Books, which has a head office in Sydney and a second office in London, has seen restructurings in its workforce and last year said that it would be reducing in the number of titles it publishes
