The Kingi McKinnon Scholarship for Emerging Writers
The Kingi McKinnon Scholarship for Emerging Writers has been established in honour of Kingi McKinnon, a widely respected author and tutor on the Waiariki Creative Writing programme, who passed away suddenly in September 2006.
Scholarship Information
This scholarship is open to unpublished* writers who wish develop their creative writing skills with a view to achieving publication, and will pay the fees of the Waiariki Certificate in Creative Writing for one year.
Please note that for 2008 the Certificate begins 25th February and ends 2nd December.
Entry Criteria
· Applicants should be unpublished* writers
· There is no age limit for applicants but you must be either a New Zealand Citizen or hold New Zealand Residency
· Because the Certificate is taught online, applicants must have reliable access to a computer and internet connection.
· Applicants are asked to submit two pieces of writing up to 500 words in any two of the following genre: short story, poetry, review, comment, or essay. In addition, the application should include a piece of no more than 300 words on why they should be the recipient of the scholarship.
· Work must be the original work of the applicant.
· Applicants under the age of 18 must have signed parental/guardian approval attached to their application form.
· Applicants must not be currently employed in a field directly connected with fiction or non-fiction writing.
· Applications must be received by the Waiariki Institute of Technology by 31st January 2008
· The successful applicant will be advised by 14th February 2008.
· The successful applicant will be expected to complete the course work on time and pass all courses, and to acknowledge the Scholarship in their future CV.

*For the purpose of this scholarship, ‘unpublished’ refers to paid writing, not to work published without payment. Applicants may have published up to three items for which they were paid minimum fees. Please advise details in application form.
