This year's wide open awards season didn't narrow down too much as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominations for the 65th annual Golden Globes on Thursday morning, spreading its largesse among a large field of contenders.
Atonement, the tony British drama of love and war based on the novel by Ian McEwan, led the pack with seven noms, including best drama and acting noms for its two leads, Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. Charlie Wilson's War, a comic look at the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, followed with five nominations, including best comedy or musical.
But in the best drama category, the Globes tossed nominations to a total of a whopping seven films: American Gangster, Atonement, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood .
In the case of the best comedy or musical category, the HFPA was a little more discerning, nominating Across the Universe, Charlie Wilson's War, Hairspray, Juno and Sweeney Todd.
