In a letter to the editor of the Los Angeles Times, for which Connelly once worked the crime beat, the author of the highly-popular and critically-praised Harry Bosch novels, decries the recent and growing trend of eliminating, or severely curtailing, book sections in newspapers across the country.
He argues that these moves may be penny-wise, but are almost surely pound-foolish as books, and the celebration thereof, breed readers who, in turn, read newspapers. He also laments the loss of an avenue by which readers can be introduced to new authors whose publishers are unable (or chose not) to promote them through “coop” (essentially paying booksellers to display their book).
