Cape gears up for McEwan campaign & other UK book news

An “impactful” UK publicity campaign for Ian McEwan’s forthcoming novel The Children Act (Jonathan Cape) will include a BBC Radio 4 "Today" interview on 1st September and two-week serialisation as the channel's "Book at Bedtime". A "dramatic" online trailer will also be released.

The Children Act, published on 2nd September, follows High Court judge Fiona May, whose childless marriage is facing crisis. At the same time, she is called on to try the urgent case of a 17-year-old boy, Adam, refusing medical treatment which could save his life. His devout parents share his wishes and Fiona’s judgement of whether a secular court should overrule faith has consequences for both her and Adam.

Jonathan Cape said the publication of the book “is set to be a big publishing event”.
The publicity campaign will begin on 31st August, with interviews with McEwan in the Sunday Times Magazine and The Observer Magazine, while a piece written by McEwan will run in the Guardian on 6th September.

The Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland will interview McEwan at an event on Cadogan Hall, London, on 1st September.
Further interviews with McEwan will feature on BBC Radio 4's "Open Book", BBC Radio 3’s "The Verb", and BBC World Service’s "News Hour. McEwan will appear on BBC "Sunday AM" with Andrew Marr on 7th September.

Festival appearances include Cheltenham, Wimbledon and the University of East Anglia and the author will also take part in events at Waterstones in Sheldonian, Oxford and Toppings in Bath, among others.
A “dramatic trailer” for The Children Act will be released as part of a targeted online video advertising campaign in September.
