Life has served our queen of wicked one-liners the good, the not-so-good and the downright ugly, but in this new original collection, novelist and columnist Sarah-Kate Lynch manages to provide the laughs on every single page as she transforms tragedy into triumph and sometimes back again - two or three times - in her search for happiness.
Turning 50 was marked by a year of celebration for
Sarah-Kate, whose columns, initially in NZ Woman’s Weekly and now NZ
Woman’s Day, have had readers seeking out her witticisms in their hundreds
of thousands for nearly two decades.
But making the big five-o wasn’t just about shopping
for shoes in Paris and remaining en vacance no matter how many times she
was told to go home — it was also a time to reflect on what she thinks is,
ultimately, the recipe for a happy life.
Screw you Dolores: A Wicked Approach to Happiness is
the long-awaited follow up to Stuff It: A Wicked Approach to Dieting and
kick starts her Wicked Approach series, with a third one already in the
pipeline.
Just like the author herself, who’s sure to delight
audiences at May‘s ‘Auckland Writers and Readers Festival’, Screw You
Dolores is smart, funny and shrewd.
Sarah-Kate thoughtfully reflects on marriage,
children, friendships, waistlines, career hurdles and also how she’s dealt with
some bigger, darker blips along the way.
This fresh, lively book hums with hilarious anecdotes
on subjects from finding the perfect boots, to the correct use for whiteboards,
losing jobs, gaining pounds, star-gazing (of the Hugh Jackman kind) and
wearing, or preferably not wearing, “poo-catcher” pants.
Along the way she shares quotes from her heroes, from
Gandhi to Dolly Parton, and concocts helpful if not entirely truthful lists to
help all of us who need it to survive the hurdles of everyday life with, if not
a spring in their step, at least a smile.
Buy it for yourself or for a friend or simply for a
good giggle. And buy it because as Sarah-Kate explores how to make herself
happy by ignoring the expectations of others, she reveals great wisdom, too. I have to confess that I burst out laughing several times while reading Screw You Dolores and smiled on frequent occasions.
It is an absolutely adorable treat for any mum this
Mother’s Day.
“Buy this book, or I will have a terrible Mother’s
Day.” Sarah-Kate Lynch’s mother.
“Screw You Dolores is the best book I have ever read
and I think everyone who likes my own books should buy at least two copies.” Nicholas
Sparks
“Her head is almost exactly the right size.” Elle
McPherson
“Inventing quotes to make yourself sound fantastic is
actually much harder than it looks.” Sarah-Kate
Lynch
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sarah-Kate Lynch is a novelist and
columnist and has worked as a journalist, radio presenter, television producer,
magazine editor, typist and once, for a very short while, as a waitress. She
has published eight hugely popular novels plus the diet book, and is currently
Travel Editor of NZ Woman’s Day, a dreadful job that you should not even
think about trying to nick off her or she will hurt you. I mean really hurt
you.
Critic Margie Thomson has attributed the international
success of Sarah-Kate’s fiction to her ‘distinctive voice at the quality end of
the popular-fiction genre’ and Margie Thomson is not even related to
Sarah-Kate.The author lives with her husband and her dog, except when she is
somewhere else, which is a pretty good system.
