Former bookseller David White reports from Matamata

One of the greatest transformations in a bookshop happened over the weekend here in Matamata. The Storyteller, a children's bookshop that was away from the centre of the shops has taken over the premises of a Take Note in the middle of town. Cinderella has arrived!
I doubt if I have ever seen such a change. From what was a dull and grubby store full of stuff suitable for nostalgia or remainders, is now a vibrant childrens bookshop (no remainders, what are they?)

Marie Bentham (left) has created a new benchmark that draws in book buyers with a wow factor. They put in long hours over the weekend (with a big team of helpers) that had this mornings customers asking, "Have you knocked a wall out? It's so open."

For all those who say you can't sell childrens books and the booktrade is on the way out, then a dose of Marie's medicine will change their minds. Hard back kids books - not a problem! I have to say, just walking in the door lifted my spirits!
