14 June 2013 - Media release
Selecting a shortlist in the
2013 PANZ Book Design Awards was not a small feat for the judges, in the major
industry awards in New Zealand to celebrate quality book design.
With entries once again
surpassing the previous year’s record numbers, the judging process was a bigger
challenge than ever.
Finalists were selected
across seven categories, with a minimum of three and maximum of five finalists
singled out as leaders in their field. The new best cookbook category,
introduced to the awards this year, enabled the judges to separate out the best
of the illustrated from the purely food-focused.
“Illustrated is always a hard
category to impress in as it’s the one where designers get to really show their
skills, and this was the hardest to judge,” said Gideon Keith, convener of the
judging panel.
Judges Gideon Keith
(convener), Sarah Maxey, Iain Sharp and Megan van Staden (2012 Young Designer
of the Year) made up the esteemed judging panel.
Notable this year was the
raised standard of the educational category entries, one of which was selected
as a finalist for best cover. “It was both surprising and wonderful to see an
educational book as a contender in best cover,” Gideon noted. “This is a tough
section: the work involved, the audience and the material make the educational
designer’s job a hard one – the ones who got it right shone through.”
Also shortlisted in the
awards are the three contenders for the 2013 PANZ Young Designer of the Year.
The finalists in the line-up are three young women: Anna Egan-Reid, Carla Sy
and Kate Barraclough. Each designer submitted a portfolio of between three and
five books designed in 2012, and one standout designer will be selected to take
away the top young designer award.
Of the seven category winners
on the night, the Gerard Reid Award for Best Book sponsored by Nielsen Book
Services will be announced as the overall winner.
The PANZ Book Design Awards
will take place at the Gus Fisher Gallery in Auckland on 18 July.
