Chatto & Windus has acquired Road Ends, the third novel by Mary Lawson, author of Crow Lake.Publishing director Clara Farmer and senior editor Poppy Hampson at Chatto, Susan Kamil at The Dial Press, Random House in the US, and Louise Dennys and Marion Garner at Knopf Canada acquired English language rights in the novel from Felicity Rubinstein at Lutyens & Rubinstein.
Road Ends is described as "the story of the Cartwright family, living in the beautiful wilderness of Northern Ontario, in the fictional small town of Struan in the 1960s, and their eldest daughter Meg, who realises one day that life is passing her by, and books a one-way ticket to London".
Lawson's debut Crow Lake sold in 26 territories, and her second, The Other Side of the Bridge, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2006.
Knopf Canada will publish in autumn 2013, with Chatto & Windus and The Dial Press to publish in spring 2014.
