First app from Auckland publisher David Ling's Duck Creek Press

Melinda Szymanik and Gabriella Klepatski’s The House That Went To Sea, Duck Creek’s hardcover picture book, is now available from the iTunes store for both iPad and iPhone. ‘Because it’s only $1.29 it’s a great complement to the book or sampler for those who are interested in buying the book,’ says publisher David Ling.
The app is a spin-off from David taking his Duck Creek Press children’s books to the Bologna Fair last March. It is in partnership with UK app developer Ten Robots, a company recently formed by children’s publisher Neil Irani of Smallfish.

David did the narration himself, but all animation and other sound has been done by Ten Robots.

‘It’s been great fun putting this together, and working at such a distance with Neil hasn’t given us any problems. We’ve tested it out bit by bit as it has developed, flicking files and comments backwards and forwards until we got it as we wanted.

‘On the app there is also a direct link to Fishpond to make purchasing copies of the book online really easy.’

In addition to the screenshots, the photo above shows David testing the app with granddaughter Emma, whose favourite part of the story is the giggling mermaids.
