SAVE WITH JAMIE - pity about the NZ rrp !

Save with Jamie - shop smart, cook clever, waste less
Jamie Oliver
Penguin Books - Hardback $65.00

This is what Jamie has to say himself about his new book:

This year, I've got the message loud and clear that as everyone comes under bigger and bigger financial pressure, they want help to cook tasty, nutritious food on a budget, so this book was born completely out of public demand.

Save with Jamie draws on knowledge and cooking skills to help you make better choices, showing you how to buy economically and efficiently, get the most out of your ingredients, save time and prevent food waste. And there's no compromise - I'm talking big flavours, comfort food that makes you happy, and colourful, optimistic dishes.

Our biggest luxury is knowledge, whether times are hard or not, so get kitchen smart and smash the recession.

Footnote:
Although I love this book,(made his Scilian squash & chickpea stew a couple of nights ago and it was outstanding), and I see it is the 13th Jamie Oliver title on my shelf,  I do think the NZ rrp is rather on the high side. The UK price is pds.26.00, (and is widely discounted in UK), so one might have expected it to be around NZ$55.00,(or at a stretch even $59.95), especially in view of the fact that the purpose of the book is to provide nutritious food on a budget.
If Penguin Books NZ set local prices too high then it will just lead to further losses of sales at NZ bookstores as customers will seek to buy online at more realistic prices. In my view this is a great pity and something Penguin Books NZ should be more mindful of.

Hi Graham
Good point. Although I don't begrudge paying local Popular Penguins prices here,it still rankles that I can pick them up at Australian ports for below the $NZ/AUS conversion rate, even after factoring in the (Aussie-owned) BNZ's evil overseas Visa transaction surcharge. The difference on more expensive/more obscure books can be even worse. This reminds me of the bad old days of the 1970s/80s when specialist UK publishers warehoused in Oz and we Kiwis had to pay two sets of mark-ups/exchange rates/highway robbery. I suspect the collpase of local distribution won't make it any better. Watch out for book flap price clipping to re-emerge in our bookshops!

Bought this for my daughter in Melbourne Target store for A$25.00 - was looking forward to purchasing it here - sadly, not at NZ$65.00! It would seem that the rrp is out of tune with the whole books message.
