Penguin Australia to publish Green Popular Penguins - 50 classic crime novels

Penguin Books Australia has announced that it will publish 50 classic crime novels in July as part of a new range of Green Popular Penguins.

The new range will feature a green version of the iconic Popular Penguin design, described as ‘a nod to the design for Penguin’s original “Mystery and Crime” series’, which first appeared in the 1940s. Each title will be priced at A $9.95 for the print version, with those titles available as ebooks priced at A$7.99.
The range includes titles from 38 authors including Edgar Allen Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Wallace, John Creasy, E C Bentley, Daphne du Maurier, Scott Turnow, Raymond Chandler and Nicci French. A full list of titles can be seen here.

The Green Popular Penguins will be available from 24 July. Booksellers will also be able to order point-of-sale material and merchandise, including canvas tote bags.

Penguin sales director Peter Blake said in a statement that Penguin was thrilled to be ‘dressing a host of great crime writers in Penguin’s famous green livery’. ‘One of the questions most asked when we originally published the Popular Penguins was: would we be bringing back the Penguin green crime titles?’ said Blake.
‘As is the case with the original orange Popular Penguins, this promotion will allow a range of fabulous books and authors to be discovered by a fresh generation of readers,’ said Blake.

Penguin said in the same statement that is has now sold more than 2.5 million copies of its Popular Penguins range since it was launched in September 2008. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Penguin is currently selling a limited-edition set of 12 Pink Popular Penguins to help raise money for the McGrath Foundation.
