  • Photo album from the family of Ernest Hemingway with more than 100 family photographs. One of several lots in this sale from the family of Ernest Hemingway's younger sister Ursula. Estimate: $10,000/15,000.

  • First edition in the rare original dust jacket of the Virginia Lee Burton's classic children's story Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Estimate: $3,000/5,000.

  • Original watercolor illustration of a Unicorn by Michael Hague. Part of a collection of original illustration art and signed posters included in this auction. Estimate: $2,000/2,500.

  • Ted Davies woodcut series Cards of Life, Cards of Death. One of only 30 copies. Estimate: $4,000/6,000.

  • First edition of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, signed by 21 members of the cast and crew of the 1955 film adaptation. Estimate: $2,000/3,000.

  • First Edition of D.H. Lawrence's St. Mawr. Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to his first wife, Hadley. Estimate $2,000/3,000.

  • Original watercolor illustration by Daniel San Souci from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of The Ugly Duckling. Estimate $1,500/2,000.

  • First Edition of Flannery O'Connor's second and final novel The Violent Bear it Away. Signed by the author. Estimate: $2,000/3,000.
* The nursery rhymes of Mother Goose with illustrations by Arthur Rackham. One of 1130 copies signed by the illustrator. Estimate: $1,200/1,800.

Fine Travel and Plate Books: A Private Collection - Sotheby's
The single-owner collection of Fine Travel and Plate Books offered at Sotheby's London on 28th February sold for a premium-inclusive £2,496,940, which was well over the pre-sale high estimate.

The auction was very well attended, with bidders in the packed saleroom, together with numerous others on the telephones and online from all over the globe, competing for the lots. Demonstrating the strength of the market for fine copies of rare books, the sale achieved world record auction prices for many works. These include Thomas and Willam Daniell's Oriental Scenery (£337,250), Freycinet's own copy of his Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes (£97,250), Denon's Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte (£85,250) Soltykoff's Voyage dans l'Inde (£67,250), Nebel's Voyage pittoresque... Mexique (£61,250) and Laborde and Zurlauben's Tableaux... de la Suisse (£58,250).
