MADA faculty dean Shane Murray said the newly established award ‘extends beyond the boundaries of the university and reaches out into the community of creative practice’ and ‘recognises the international profile that book design has in Australia and New Zealand’.

The organising committee received over 315 nominations after calling for entries in January from designers, printers, publishers and readers. The judges selected a shortlist of 37 books, then narrowed this down to 11 winners. All the books were published in Australia and New Zealand during 2011 and 2012. The judging panel included architect Peter Corrigan, UK designer James Langdon, design lecturers Denise Whitehouse and Warren Taylor, and Auckland’s split/fountain director Layla Tweedie-Cullen.

The MBBANZ award winners were announced at the opening of an exhibition featuring the winners and highly mentioned books. The exhibiton runs from 20-25 March at the MADA Gallery at Monash University in Caulfield, Victoria.
