The author of the Horrible Histories books has claimed he does not want his books used in classrooms because children will not enjoy the stories if they are forced to read them.

Terry Deary said he shudders to think of his books, which include Terrible Tudors and Vile Victorians, being used in lessons and that he would like to be able to sue schools for doing so.
The author, whose books have sold more than 25 million copies and spawned a television series and an award-winning play, said he would rather children picked them up on their own rather than being handed them by teachers.
He told the London Evening Standard: "I shudder when I hear my books are used in those pits of misery and ignorance.
"People come up to me quite independently to say thanks for writing the books. They say, 'My children had never read books until they came across yours'."
Mr Deary also claimed Ofsted school inspectors who criticise literacy standards are "failed teachers" and "the most ignorant people you could ever meet".
