Macsyna King is said to be living in fear after protesters threatened online to kill her and neighbours took action against the upcoming release of her tell-all book. The mother of twins Chris and Cru Kahui has written, with journalist Ian Wishart, an expose on the boys' deaths in 2006 called Breaking Silence: The Kahui Case.
The book has sparked the formation of a Facebook group, Boycott the Macsyna King Book, which urges people not to buy it.
Wishart told Campbell Live last night that comments on Facebook had made Ms King feel unsafe. "She has been living in fear for the last 24 hours; there's been some activity in her neighbourhood that has been directed toward her ... she's fearful."
"Looking at the Facebook page, there were threats to burn down bookshops ... put a bullet through Macsyna's head, people have been whipped up into hysteria effectively by a lynch mob."
Paper Plus and The Warehouse said on Wednesday that they would not sell the book. Whitcoulls has not yet made a decision.
Wishart said he was disappointed in the shops. "I think they've gone weak at the knees ... We sell Mein Kampf by Hitler and the Communist Manifesto. You can buy any range of books. People have chosen this one and it's really because of cyber-bullying."
