THE BOOKMAN IS TRYING NOT TO BUY BOOKS

Since arriving in London Saturday I have been in seven bookshops (including the world-renowned Hatchards) and until today I managed not to buy any books. When we travel to France on Sunday there is a 20kg weight limit on our luggage and I was already slightly over that on leaving Auckland hence my attempt not to buy any books.
Today however while in the quite splendid bookshop at the Victoria & Albert Museum I succumbed to a most unlikely title, The Ivy Look. I guess it was a combination of nostalgia (back to the days of my youth) and all those photos of Vespas!
The Ivy Look

The Ivy Look
Classic American Clothing - An Illustrated Pocket Guide

By Graham Marsh and J.P.Gaul - pds.12.99

A pictorial celebration of the clothing and accessories that dominated the American male dress code from 1955 to 1965.

Democratic, stylish and comfortable, the Ivy Look was the height of cool, worn by presidents and hipsters alike, and its impact and influence can be seen to this day in the clothes of designers such as Ralph Lauren, and in the continuing popularity of classics like the Harrington jacket and Levi’s 501s.

Digging deep into the vaults, the book combines new illustrations and still life shots of original clothing and accessories with contemporary magazine advertisements, key movie posters and album cover art, and photographs of icons like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Miles Davis to bring the Ivy Look into sharp focus. Fascinating !

Indeed, be careful of those airline excess baggage charges - returning from Frankfurt last year I was hit 360 Euros for being 10 kg overweight - and that only covered as far as Singapore! Posting the books back home is the better way to go.

I know how tempting it is but you can buy this from Book Depository when you get home with no cost for postage.
