RODGERS BOOK BARN, NY

Just back from a visit to Rodgers Book Barn in an isolated rural area outside the small town of Hillsdale a couple of hours or so nw of New York City. When I was last here over the Christmas/New Year holidays the place was deep in snow, a far cry form the lush green grass, the healthy flower garden and the the heavily leafed trees that surround this very special barn.

You can check out this most interesting destination at www.rodgersbookbarn.com

Last time I was here I filled a carton with books but I exercised a little more control this time, (the thought of excess baggage comes to mind too), confining myself to four interesting looking non-fiction titles:

DEAD ENDS
An Irreverent Field Guide to the Graves of the Famous
David Cross & Robert Bent
Plume 1991  - $3.50

WEDDINGS, WAKES, THE COCKTAIL HOUR AND MORE PARTIES- a literary companion
Edited by Susanna Johnston
The Overlook Press  1997  -   $2.50

LITERARY NEW YORK
A History and Guide
Susan Edmiston & Linda Cirino
Houghton Miflin 1976 -  $4.50

THE NEW YOK TIMES MANUAL OF STYLE & USAGE
Allan M Siegal & William G Connolly
Three Rivers Press 1999 - $3.00

The prices quoted are the prices I paid today. I rate Rodgers Book Barn as one of the most interesting second-hand bookstores anywhere on earth (and probably the most reasonably priced) and urge my blog readers to visit if you are ever in this part of the world. It is a treasure trove and Mrs.Rodgers who founded the business way back in the early 60's and still runs the business today seems to know every one of the hundred thousand or so titles she has in stock. The Barn is open Thurs-Monday 11am-5pm April 1 to October 31 and then Fri-Monday same hours November 1 - March 31. So it is open EVERY weekend of the year.
Mrs.Rodgers was born in the UK, worked in the publishing world in NY until she set up her Book Barn in 1962, her 50th anniversary is coming up.Chatting to her today she told me spends most of her days off at this time of the year in her most impressive flower garden which surrounds the Book Barn and her adjacent home. That is when she is not away purchasing the books from an estate in the district.
Between the Book Barn and her home is an annexe also filled with books, all paperback 50c and hardback $, her remiander room I call it. Then outside the annexe is a table filled with free books carrying the sign - next stop your car.Love that.
