Ian Conrich writes:

Dear All - Please be advised of the second (of the 4) planned auctions of Maori postcards. This was part of my collection which was on loan at the former Centre for New Zealand Studies. Best - Ian

The auction closes 9 August and a very detailed catalogue can be obtained from Jeff Long at <jefflong@xtra.co.nz>. He is based in Christchurch and can also be contacted by phone (0064) 3 384 8463.
There are approximately 450 postcards in this auction and many are real photos. the subjects covered in this batch are all of the cards on the following: Maori warriors, family groups, the hongi, iwi (tribes), Maori smoking, carvings and carvers, tangi (funerals), weddings, the process of tattooing, tohungas (priests), singers (songstress Ana Hato), children diving for pennies, the pink and white terraces and the eruption of Mt Tarawera, Maori displays at exhibitions, the Maori and the First World War, washing, cooking, Maori games, fishing and boats (including canoe races),  cloaks and weaving, and part 1 of the Maori guides (approximately 85 including Maggie Papakura, and guides Sophia, Kathleen, Georgina, Eileen, Beatrice, Bella, Pipi, Tina, Nimble, Ruth, Minnie, Maryanna, Eva, and Rangi)

Information from the previous auction -
Over some time I had collected Maori postcards dating from when they began  (in the very early Edwardian period) to 1930. The collection totalled nearly 1200 different postcards and contains many very rare items, some of which have not been seen for sale for more than a decade. This is believed to be the largest ever collection of Maori postcards made available for sale and in that context the New Zealand Postcard Society has offered to co-ordinate the auctions.
