David Carnoy originally released his mystery/thriller Knife Music as an iPhone app, which was first rejected on grounds of obscenity. It eventually went on to sell 30,000 copies on Kindle, as well as in a paperback from Amazon's BookSurge. The book's success attracted the attention of Peter Mayer at The Overlook Press, which has just released it as a hardcover. Here, Carnoy discusses negotiating the leap from DIY digital publishing to conventional print publishing.

Is Apple Guilty of Censorship?

Carnoy describes how his original submission of his novel as an iPhone app was rejected on the grounds of censorship. After some pruning of "F-bombs" from the novel, it was accepted. Apple's Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying that his company's iPhone and iPad platform offers the world "freedom" from smut. But rejecting a novel on the basis of foul language and racey content -- isn't that censorship?
