Fictionalising History with Graeme Lay - Devenport Library Event

Devonport Associates Event – GRAEME LAY – 6 September 2016
at Devonport Library 7.30pm to 9.00 pm

FICTIONALISING HISTORY: from JAMES COOK to FLETCHER CHRISTIAN

Devonport novelist Graeme Lay has spent the last five years converting historical reality to fiction, in order to bring back to life such famous figures as James Cook, Joseph Banks, Tupaia and William Bligh.

His research culminated in the bestselling novel trilogy The Secret Life of James Cook (2013), James Cook’s New World (2014) and James Cook’s Lost World (2015), all published by HarperCollins, in New Zealand and Australia.

Graeme’s talk will reveal how this project came about, along with the perils and pleasures of writing in the genre sometimes called ‘faction’. The talk will be illustrated with photographs of South Pacific locations closely associated with James Cook’s voyages, and with the mutiny on the Bounty and its aftermath.
