Antiquarian Book News from Ibookcollector

Hero Comics for Sale

A man from Kentucky is planning to auction a rare comic collection which includes heroes such as; Superman, Batman and Flash Gordon. John C. Wise has been accumulating the collection over three decades.

The comics being sold were bought for as little as 10 cents when they were published, many in the late 1930s and 1940s. Mr Wise is auctioning about 175 comics individually, and online bidders have already committed at least a half-million dollars to the auction.

Among the offerings is a pristine issue of Flash Comics No. 1 from 1940, which tells the story of how college student Jay Garrick gained super-human speed by inhaling fumes in a lab accident.

Valuable works stolen from College

The police have been called in at All Hallows College, Dublin following the discovery that several very valuable items have gone missing.

Fr Patrick McDevitt, president of the College, said that the Gardaí were called in some weeks ago when it was discovered that items were missing which were estimated to be valued “in the thousands”. However, a valuer and expert in rare books, Owen Felix O’Neill, claimed the loss to the college amounted to “quite a few million.”

The items missing include prints by Raphael, 37 engravings by 18th century Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi as well as a first edition, in two volumes, of a book by Isaac Newton and many other books and letters.
