The Song of the Nightingale, the Sound of the iPhone: Contemporary Pakistani Fiction and the Modern World
From Bapsi Sidhwa’s 1979 carnivalesque novel The Crow Eaters, to the jazzy slang of Mohsin Hamid’s  How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia (2013), Pakistani fiction is electrifying and insistent. Contemporary Pakistani writers deal with history, ancient and recent; with politics, local and global; and with family and modernity. Ranging from the decorum of tradition to the complexities of living in the 21st-century city, this talk introduces the voices and stories of a vibrant and various literature.

Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

RSVP by Friday 15 November.  Phone 04-472 1000 or email rsvp@vuw.ac.nz with ‘Pakistan’ in the subject line.
