New Wimpy Kid Starts with Over A Million Units

Publishers Lunch

Abrams announced that Jeff Kinney's Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, the eighth book in his bestselling series, sold over 1.3 million copies around the world in its first week on sale. Abrams ceo Michael Jacobs says in the announcement that sales "have exceeded all our expectations. We're thrilled that the new book has debuted so strongly. This is just the beginning, as there is lots more excitement to come with the tours, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon, and the holiday shopping season ahead."

Nielsen Bookscan recorded sales of over 80,000 books in the UK, and over 387,000 books in the US (where special accounts not tracked by the service as well as school book clubs and fairs comprise a significant part of the market). We asked a number of follow-up questions and an Abrams spokesperson expects to have additional details to share shortly.

Abrams printed 5.5 million copies in the US, after printing 6.5 million copies for 2012's seventh volume THE THIRD WHEEL -- which was the first book issued in both ebook and print editions simultaneously -- and 6 million copies for CABIN FEVER in in 2011. (The latter sold "more than one million copies" in the first on sale, Abrams had reported.)
