Borders laid off another 45 staff yesterday, with 40 going in its Ann Arbor head office.
The remaining five are from its distribution centres, according to a report in the Detroit News. Last week, Borders announced it was closing its distribution centre near Nashville, Tennessee with the loss of 310 jobs.
Spokeswoman Mary Davis said: "This decision is a result of Borders' focus on reducing costs and re-adjusting its business model to improve profitability and cash flow. The realignment at (headquarters) encompasses nearly all business areas, including IT (information technology), human resources, finance and merchandising." Fifteen managerial positions were cut last week.
