Honouring the King, past and present
- Auckland Book launch

More than fifty years after the original edition of King Pōtatau was published by the Polynesian Society, the sought after book has remained out of print for many years. In 2006 the late Māori Queen Te Ata-i-rangi-kaahu expressed an wish that the Polynesian Society consider publishing a second edition of this important work.

After the Queen’s death later that year, the society sought approval for the new edition from the present Māori King Te Arikinui Tuheitia Paki (Tuheitia), and this was gladly given.

King Tuheitia, the seventh Maori monarch, attended the book launch of Huia Publishers' King Pōtatau last night at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland in conjunction with The Polynesian Society.

The book challenges the allocation of responsibility and blame for the events that led up to the wars of the 1860s and the Māori king Movement. Author, Pei Te Hurinui argues that the wars coincided with, rather than developed from, the establishment of the Māori King.

It is believed that this book was Te Hurinui (1898–1976) most ambitious work. King Pōtatau is a new edition of an account of the life of Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, the first Māori King.

The book was launched by Hon. Nanaia Mahuta M.P. following the powhiri.
