Last newsletter from the Holloway Press - Peter Simpson bids farewell

My 20-year involvement with the Holloway Press came to an end on 30 September with the termination of my part-time contract as Director. There are a number of matters that I wish to communicate to customers and supporters of the Press, including how to order copies of books still in print, future showings of the retrospective exhibition: Dark Arts: Twenty Years of the Holloway Press, and finally the availability of a last 'posthumous'  publication, Lettters to Ron, by Alan Loney. I will start with the last matter.

1. Letters to Ron:  Vale
the Holloway Press, by Alan Loney
When Alan Loney was unable to travel from Melbourne for the opening of Dark Arts he offered to write something which could either be read at the opening or used in another way. The Faculty of Arts kindly agreed to the text being letterpress printed using Alan's unused air fares to fund it.
Letters to Ron is letterpress printed by Tara McLeod on a Littlejohn cylinder press. The text is 12 point linotype Janson, titles are handset in 'Shadow,' an American typeface. The paper is handmade from New Zealand flax by Centrepoint Papermill. Cover paper is 'Cloudy Sky' handmade by Cave Paper Inc, USA. 8 pp. 32 copies. Signed and numbered. Price $75 plus $8 package and post = $83.

With this publication the Holloway Press comes full circle. Alan Loney instigated the Holloway Press in 1992 and became its first printer-manager and co-director, 1994-98. He reflects on this background and the implications of the Press's closure 20 years and some 40 books later in three letters written to the late Ron Holloway, whose gift of materials and equipment made the Press possible, and whose example is honoured in its name. The beautiful cover paper 'Cloudy Sky' from Cave Paper in the USA was generously chosen and paid for by Alan. The paper used for the text is also highly appropriate. Alan had a great liking for the handmade flax (harakeke) paper by Ulrich Schmid at Centrepoint Papermill. He used it for several publications, including The Love Songs of Ibykos (deluxe version), A Shipboard Diary (deluxe version) and Robert Creeley/Max Gimblett, The Dogs of Auckland. Sufficient sheets of this paper still survived at the Holloway Press to produce the 32 copies of this small booklet.

3. Dark Arts: Twenty Years of the Holloway Press

In October two separate versions of the Holloway Retrospective are being shown in Auckland and Christchurch:

i. At Auckland University of Technology, 24-26 October, 2014, durring the Association of Book Crafts Conference

ii. At Christchurch Public Library in association with Christchurch Art Gallery, 6 October - 14 November, 2014, curated by Peter Vangioni.

This Newsletter is essentially my last act as Director of the Holloway Press. It has been a long, fascinating and worthwhile journey.

Best wishes and thank you for your support.

Peter Simpson
