Book launch of Harbour Bridge: Auckland, 1958-59 by Philippa Werry
(Scholastic, May 2014)
The author writes:
Thanks to Maria at Next Page Please children's bookshop in Takapuna for
hosting this book launch on Sunday 8 June, and thanks to all those who came
along (especially those who don't really like driving over the bridge!)
Many friends and family attended, Penny Scown from Scholastic formally
launched the book and William Bourke (https://www.facebook.com/wbourkephotography)
took the great photographs.
A lot of stories about the bridge emerged through the afternoon, and it seems as if many Aucklanders will have their own memories of it: if not of the original construction in the 1950s, and the famous Pickaback operation in November 1958, then of seeing the "clip-ons" added in the 1960s, or paying to go through the toll booths until tolls were abolished in 1984.

Published in time for the 55th anniversary of the opening of the bridge,
this title is part of Scholastic's popular My New Zealand story series.
Each book in the series is written in the form of a fictional diary by a
child living through important events in New Zealand's history. John
McIntyre reviewed Harbour Bridge on Radio NZ recently and said,
"It's our history, it's fascinating. We're a young country but we have a
valid history and these sort of books tell it. I love that they exist."
