Bookman I was interested to see the piece on Endangered Words on Monday’s blog.
I thought you might like to know we published a fascinating little book in 2008, still in print, called From Afterwit to Zemblanity: 100 Endangered Words Brought to Life by Simon Hertnon.
Our rights team was successful in securing Simon a US publishing deal, where it was published by Skyhorse as Endangered Words: A Collection of Rare Gems for Book Lovers.
The Bookman responds:
Thanks Belinda, I had forgotten about your book, have now pulled it down from my shelf and spent an enjoyable couple of hours reading through it. It is indeed a real gem for all wordsmiths - a collection of rare and neglected words that will delight anyone keen to enrich their verbal repertoire.
Each of these 100 hand-picked words comes with a precise definition, a quotation from literature, a personal note from the author validating its inclusion in the book, and, as a light-hearted finale, an example of its use in a witty piece of serialised fiction. Filled with words to be treasured for their elegant precision, from anacampserote to sprezzatura to zemblanity, it is a perfect handbook for writers, an excellent resource for communicators, and an entertaining read for anyone with an appetite for some of the brightest gems of the English language.
About the author:
Simon Hertnon studied linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He began his writing career in 1990 as a freelance journalist and has been writing professionally ever since. Today, Simon is a communications consultant and philosopher. He is the author of two previous books, Love & Logic: A bloke’s guide to commitment and Clear, Concise, Compelling: How to write less and achieve more.
