Amazon 'close' to UK launch date for Kindle

Amazon is close to finalising a launch date for its Kindle electronic book reader in the UK, Mobile magazine reports. It suggests that the online retailer is in "advanced negotiation" with a mobile operator over securing online connectivity in the UK.
Amazon is understood to have outsourced all aspects of manufacturing for the Kindle in the UK to Qualcomm, which describes itself as a leading developer of next-generation wireless technology.Amazon is understood to be frantically working on having the Kindle ready for launch before Christmas 2009. Mobile reports that it has already secured agreements with book publishers, and is also in the process of negotiating with news and magazine publishers.
A spokesman for Amazon said: "We have previously announced that we are looking to release the Kindle with our international customers. At the moment we have no timeline."
