Faber and Faber has acquired the second novel by Maria McCann, (pic left), which Faber has "huge ambition" for.
Sarah Savitt, fiction editor, bought UK and Commonwealth rights including Canada from agent, Annette Green.
The Wilding is due to be published in February 2010, as Savitt said she wanted to get the book out "as quickly as possible".
Savitt said that she was so enthusiastic about the title, that she put in a pre-emptive offer during a tea-break at the Faber sales conference after reading it.She said: "I am thrilled that The Wilding is my first acquisition for the Faber fiction list. So many people remember and love her first novel As Meat Loves Salt (Flamingo) and this, her second novel, has been worth the wait. "It is beautifully written and utterly compelling - I read it overnight and think that many readers will too. Faber feel very lucky to be her new home."The book tells of family secrets and passionate love, set after the English Civil War. Savitt said it has the "same amazing atmosphere" as the first book. "McCann effortlessly gets the historical element across," she said.

Thanks for posting this, I am a great fan of "As meat loves salt" and have often checked to see if the author had written anything else. It is probably one of the most dark and potent historical novels I've ever read.
Totally agree - I loved As Meat Loves Salt; it was massively powerful.
LOVED As Meat Loves Salt, and always wondered if more would be coming from this fantastic and powerful author. Consider at least one copy of it sold to ME!!
