Among the top authors and illustrators appearing are American writer and performer John Farrell, with Kiwi award-winners David Hill and Gavin Bishop, sand artist Marcus Winter, te reo Maori novelist Dr Darryn Joseph, storyteller Apirana Taylor, and musicians, craft activities, readings and theatre performances.

The Aotea Centre event will feature Australian writer Rachel Spratt (Nanny Piggins series) and John Farrell, with more than twenty leading authors including Joy Cowley, Mark Sommerset, David Hill, Stacy Gregg, Sally Sutton and Fraser Williamson. Schools’ theatre performances, readings and non-fiction displays complete an action-packed six hours of programming.

During the week the Auckland Story Tour will see illustrator Gavin Bishop, author Dr Darryn Joseph and storyteller Apirana Taylor visiting a number of schools in greater Auckland.

Workshops for writing and illustration will be presented on Saturday 17 August.

The Mayor of Auckland Len Brown and Labour MP Jacinda Ardern will attend a 20th Anniversary Gala Evening on Saturday 17 August at the National Library, Parnell.

The Storylines Festival, New Zealand’s oldest annual literary festival, began in Auckland in 1993, bringing to life an idea of author Joy Cowley.  It has since spread to six city centres around New Zealand, and includes the free family days, story tours of schools, competitions, workshops and adult seminars. Conservative estimates put the number of children reached in twenty years at well over 100,000.
