Transworld is to publish a memoir from physicist Professor Stephen Hawking.The book, My Brief History, is the first that Hawking has written entirely on his own, thanks to the development of new technology. Bantam Press, the imprint which will publish the book, described it as "his most personal book to date". The deal was done by Al Zuckerman of Writers’ House Inc in New York. Transworld bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Bantam US.
Hawking is one of the most famous scientists in the world. He has been Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for 30 years, and written bestselling books on cosmology. He was diagnosed with ALS, commonly referred to as motor neurone disease, at the age of 21.
Sally Gaminara, publishing director at Bantam Press, said: "As publishers of Stephen Hawking's iconic A Brief History of Time in 1988 and all his subsequent titles, we are delighted to be able to publish his memoir 25 years later. It is a remarkable testimony to his courage and tenacity that we can do so."
A Brief History of Time has sold more than 10 million copies in 40 languages. Hawking's memoir will cover how the book came about, as well as discussing his childhood in post-war London, his years at Oxford and Cambridge as his illness developed, his marriages, family and intellectual passions.
The book, which will be illustrated with photos from throughout Hawking's life, will be published on 12th September 2013.
